I LEAVE MY

BLUE
MARK
FOR THE OCEAN
10 Things I Can Do to take care of the Ocean.

-
1. I'll Mind My Carbon Footprint
I'll Add My GOG Commitment.

-
2. I'll Reduce or Eliminate Seafoods-fish Choices
Global fish populations are rapidly being depleted due to demand, loss of habitat, and unsustainable fishing practices. I promise to make smart seafood choices, ask if my seafood is sustainably caught and use the Monterrey Bay Seafood Watch app (seafoodwatch.org)

-
3. I'll Use Fewer Plastic Products
Plastics that end up as ocean debris contribute to habitat destruction and entangle and kill tens of thousands of marine animals each year. To limit your impact, carry a reusable water bottle, store food in nondisposable containers, bring your own cloth tote or another reusable bag when shopping, and recycle whenever possible.

-
4. I'll Help Take Care of the Beach
Whether you enjoy diving, surfing, or relaxing on the beach, always clean up after yourself and for someone else. Explore and appreciate the ocean without interfering with wildlife or removing rocks and coral.

-
5. I'll Not Purchase Items That Exploit Marine Life
Certain products contribute to the harming of fragile coral reefs and marine populations. Avoid purchasing items such as coral jewelry, tortoiseshell hair accessories (made from hawksbill turtles), and shark products

-
6. I'll Be an Ocean-Friendly Pet Owner
Read pet food labels and consider seafood sustainability when choosing a diet for your pet. Never flush cat litter, which can contain pathogens harmful to marine life. I will never release my pets, even fish, into the wild.

-
7. I'll Support Organizations Working to Protect the Ocean
Many institutes and organizations are fighting to protect ocean habitats and marine wildlife. Find a national organization and consider giving financial support or volunteering for hands-on work or advocacy. If you live near the coast, join up with a local branch or group and get involved in projects close to home.

-
8. I'll be an Influence Change in My Community
Research the ocean policies of public officials before you vote or contact your local representatives to let them know you support marine conservation projects. Consider patronizing restaurants and grocery stores that offer only sustainable seafood, and speak up about your concerns if you spot a threatened species on the menu or at the seafood counter.

-
9. I'll Travel the Ocean Responsibly
Practice responsible boating, kayaking, and other recreational activities on the water. Never throw anything overboard, and be aware of marine life in the waters around you. If you’re set on taking a cruise for your next vacation, do some research to find the most eco-friendly option.

-
10. I'll Educate Myself About Oceans and Marine Life
I Will Bring Ocean Issues into the Conversation. The biggest issue facing the oceans are that they are hidden from view. I promise to educate myself about ocean issues and talk to others about what is occurring under the sea and what they can do to help.
I add my Commitment!
Do you want to do more?
-
11. I Promise to use Ocean Friendly Products.
Many products contain harmful chemicals or ingredients that disrupt the delicate balance needed by ocean organisms.

-
12. Don’t Put In, Don’t Take Out
I promise not to pour any chemicals, gas or oil into the ground or the curbside gutter. Groundwater and drains lead to the ocean and these toxins can poison and pollute our oceans even from thousands of miles away. I also promise not to remove sea creatures for the ocean for souvenirs.

-
13. I Will Leave the Biggest and the Best for the Ocean.
Larger fish and marine animals serve key roles in the environment including much higher reproduction rates and pass along their good genes to future generations. Leaving the biggest helps the rest.

-
14. I Will Restore for More!
Supporting the restoration of shorelines, mangroves, seagrass, and coral reefs help these reefs provide critical ecosystem functions. I will support the work that many are doing to help restore these areas.

-
15. I Will Volunteer This Year!
Whether donating to ocean-worthy causes or getting your feet wet to help out, you can volunteer your time and money to help the oceans.

Thank you!
